CAS Director, Deb Boykin, Honored by VACUHO

Deb Boykin, CAS Director, has been recognized by the Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers (VACUHO), who have named their highest award in her honor. The Deb Boykin Outstanding Professional Award will be awarded annually. Boykin has an outstanding record of professional service, having served as president of VACUHO and the Southeast Association of Housing Officers (SEAHO), and in numerous roles for the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I). She presently serves as the CAS Director for ACUHO-I, and recently chaired the Orientation Programs Standards Revision Committee.

Known for her professional legacy as well as her humility and humor, Boykin serves as Director of Residence Life and Associate Vice President for Student Affairs (Campus Living) at the College of William and Mary. She received both her BA and M.Ed. from the college, and her career has spanned more than three decades of service to her alma mater. Ginger Ambler, Vice President for Student Affairs at the College of William and Mary, said, “Deb Boykin is the consummate residence life professional, having served in nearly every employment category during her W&M career—student staff member, live-in professional, and full-time administrator. Not only does she mentor our students, she has also been an incredible role model for professional colleagues over the years.”

In her speech to ACUHO-I and honoring first recipient, Emory and Henry College's Kyle Cutshaw, Boykin said, “Tomorrow's leaders live with us today. It's so humbling that today's students let us into their lives… it's not about us, it's about them, their futures.” Congratulations to Deb Boykin on a legacy of outstanding service.

About CAS
CAS was established in 1979 to develop standards that enhance college student learning and promote self-assessment for institutional effectiveness. Composed of 39 collaborating professional associations representing over 100,000 professionals in higher education, CAS has developed standards and guidelines for 43 diverse areas of the college student experiences.

The eighth edition of the book, CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education, was released in August 2012. The book of standards is the defining source of professional standards for many of the services provided to students in higher education. Along with the book, CAS released an updated CD of all 43 functional area self-assessment guides (SAGs). The SAGs provide institutions of higher education with strategies for assessing program and service effectiveness based on the evidence a self-study team gathers and evaluates. Information about CAS and its efforts over its more than three decades can be found at
