This month in our CAS Member Organization Spotlight Series, we are proud to feature the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA). Since its founding, AFA has been a hub for professionals and volunteers dedicated to advancing the field of fraternity and sorority advising in higher education. Originally established to foster collaboration among those working with fraternal organizations, AFA has grown into the leading association for professionals committed to “elevating the standard” of practice in this unique and evolving area. AFA’s mission, to elevate the standard for effective professional practice in working with sororities and fraternities in higher education, aligns directly with CAS’s own commitment to quality, assessment, and continuous improvement. As a member of the CAS consortium since 1981, AFA has used the CAS Fraternity and Sorority Advising Program Standards as a foundation to promote effective support, professional development, and community impact in the fraternity/sorority space.
Over more than four decades of CAS membership, AFA has maintained steady, thoughtful representation, with just four individuals serving as the association’s delegates to the Council. This sustained engagement reflects a deep commitment to collaborative professionalization, and has fostered meaningful partnerships with other CAS associations. The shared standards and frameworks developed through CAS continue to help AFA members design, implement, and assess programs that support student organizations while aligning with broader institutional priorities. For professionals seeking to engage more deeply with CAS, AFA offers a variety of resources. Members can access the Fraternity and Sorority Advising Program Standards through the CAS Store or explore AFA’s curated tools and guides available through their website. Dan Bureau, AFA’s CAS representative, encourages those interested in strengthening their advising practice to reach out for guidance or support. As the landscape of fraternity and sorority advising has grown more complex, encompassing both campus-based and external roles, AFA remains committed to inclusive, effective, and student-centered advising. From supporting national headquarters staff to empowering volunteer advisors, AFA represents all educators who play a role in helping chapters thrive. Looking ahead, AFA is actively expanding access to professional development opportunities, including a robust collection of on-demand courses (view here), its Annual Meeting this December (details here), and its partnership in the Student Affairs Certification project (learn more).
