As we enter January, CAS invites student affairs professionals to begin the new year with reflection, intention, and renewed commitment to student well-being, equity, and learning. January’s observances highlight the interconnected nature of mental health, safety, education, and civic responsibility across campus communities. By engaging these moments thoughtfully and using the CAS Standards as a guide, professionals can ground their efforts in continuous assessment and purposeful action, supporting holistic student development while fostering inclusive, supportive, and academically enriching environments.
International Mind-Body Wellness Day (Jan 3)
January 3 highlights the connection between mental, physical, and emotional well-being. The CAS Health Promotion Services Standards and Counseling Services Standards guide institutions in creating health-promoting campus environments, supporting personal development, and helping students cultivate the well-being needed to succeed academically and personally. Together, these standards help embed wellness into campus culture and advance holistic student success.
Human Trafficking Awareness Day (Jan 11)
January 11 raises awareness about human trafficking and the importance of prevention, education, and coordinated response. The CAS Sexual Violence-Related Programs and Services Standards and Campus Police and Public Safety Standards guide institutions in creating safe, supportive, and responsive campus environments—promoting awareness, strengthening safety education, and supporting those impacted by exploitation and violence.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan 19)
Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the legacy of leadership, service, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity. The CAS Multicultural Student Programs and Services Standards, Civic Engagement and Service-Learning Programs Standards, and Leadership Education and Development Standards guide institutions in fostering inclusive campus climates, promoting meaningful community engagement, and preparing students to lead with purpose, integrity, and social responsibility.
Blue Monday (Jan 20)
Often recognized as a time to reflect on mental and emotional well-being, Blue Monday highlights the importance of support, connection, and care. The CAS Counseling Services Standards guide institutions in helping students cultivate mental health and well-being by providing support that enables academic achievement, personal growth, and long-term success.
International Day of Education (Jan 24)
International Day of Education celebrates the transformative power of learning in shaping individual opportunity and global progress. The CAS Academic Advising Programs Standards (recently updated), Learning Assistance Programs Standards, Undergraduate Research Programs Standards, and Education Abroad Programs and Services Standards guide institutions in supporting student learning at every stage—from academic planning and skill development to research engagement and global education experiences. Together, these standards help campuses foster educational excellence, access, and student success.
