As we approach Mental Health Awareness Month in May, CAS is proud to highlight the American College Health Association (ACHA) and its critical role in advancing the health and well-being of college students nationwide. About ACHA
Founded in 1920, the American College Health Association (ACHA) serves as the principal leadership organization for college health professionals. ACHA represents individuals working across medical care, mental health care, health promotion, health insurance, and pharmacy services on college and university campuses. Through professional development, research, advocacy, and extensive resources, ACHA supports higher education professionals dedicated to enhancing student well-being and success. Mission Alignment with CAS ACHA’s mission — "to serve as the principal leadership organization for advancing the health of college students and campus communities through advocacy, education, and research" — closely aligns with CAS's commitment to quality programs, services, and student learning. Both organizations recognize that the holistic development and well-being of students are fundamental to student success. Impact of CAS Collaboration ACHA has deeply benefited from the collaborative spirit fostered by CAS. Participation in developing and refining standards for Health Promotion Services, Clinical Health Services, and Counseling Services has ensured that college health practices are well-represented within the broader student affairs framework. By establishing shared language and expectations, CAS standards have strengthened the connection between college health professionals and campus administrators, advancing student health outcomes across institutions. How CAS Standards Support ACHA Members Higher education is not always a traditional pathway for health practitioners trained in medicine, nursing, public health, or mental health. CAS Standards provide critical guidance for ACHA members, offering a bridge between the clinical and academic worlds. They help practitioners position their work within the context of higher education and articulate its value in terms that resonate with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs leaders. A Success Story: Cross-Functional Collaboration One of ACHA’s proudest collaborations with CAS is the creation of the Cross-Functional Framework for Advancing Health and Well-Being — one of the first resources designed to bridge gaps between traditionally siloed campus services. By encouraging cooperation among diverse functional areas, this Framework promotes a more integrated, strategic approach to health and well-being, maximizing resources and fostering a more holistic definition of wellness across campus communities. Opportunities for Deeper Engagement With more campuses adopting the Okanagan Charter and joining the U.S. Health Promoting Campuses Network, now is a prime opportunity for college health professionals to engage with CAS resources — especially the Cross-Functional Framework for Advancing Health and Well-Being, which is currently being updated. Once completed, it will be an invaluable tool for institutions seeking to embed health and well-being principles throughout their campus ecosystems. A Message to the Higher Education Community ACHA’s work goes beyond treating illness — it champions the whole student experience. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of college health professionals has never been more vital. ACHA remains committed to guiding campuses in building healthier, more resilient communities.
