As part of the CAS Member Organization Spotlight Series, we are excited to feature NIRSA, a leading association dedicated to advancing recreation, sport, and well-being in higher education. With a membership of nearly 4,500 professionals, students, and businesses, NIRSA plays a critical role in fostering lifelong habits of well-being and leadership among college and university students. From intramural sports and recreation centers to health promotion and outdoor adventure programs, NIRSA members shape student experiences that extend far beyond the playing field. NIRSA’s mission--“to be a leader in higher education and the advocate for the advancement of recreation, sport, and well-being”—aligns closely with CAS’s commitment to promoting best practices and continuous improvement. In recent years, NIRSA has leveraged CAS standards to enhance collegiate recreation programming, particularly through the updated Collegiate Recreation Programs standards and the introduction of new Esport Program standards. These frameworks support self-assessment, program development, and advocacy for additional resources, helping institutions strengthen and expand their recreation offerings.
At Texas State University, NIRSA member Jason Vlastaras and his team have used CAS standards as a tool for staff development and strategic planning. By engaging in conversations around questions like “Do we meet these standards?” and “How can we improve?” they ensure that their programs remain student-centered and aligned with institutional goals. Beyond program reviews, standards have also proven valuable for staff onboarding and professional development, providing new employees with a strong foundation in collegiate recreation. As NIRSA prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2025, the association continues to honor its rich history while shaping the future of campus recreation. What started with 20 professionals from 11 HBCUs meeting at Dillard University in 1950 has grown into a thriving network of recreation and well-being professionals dedicated to student success. Throughout the year, NIRSA will commemorate this milestone by reflecting on its past, engaging in the present, and leading the way forward. For higher education professionals looking to engage more with NIRSA and CAS, Jason encourages them to explore how standards can support staff development, program assessment, and continuous improvement. As collegiate recreation continues to evolve, these tools will remain essential in ensuring that institutions provide dynamic, student-centered programs that enhance well-being and leadership development.
