CAS has developed 50 sets of functional area standards and 3 cross-functional frameworks for higher education programs and services. Users can order CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education book (2023, Version 11), which includes general standards for practice and functional area standards, from the CAS online store. As part of Version 11, CAS has updated all functional area standards and accompanying self-assessment guides (SAGs); in addition, several new sets of individual functional areas are included for the first time, and many others have been significantly revised. The newest SAGs, which include a revised structure and rating scale, provide individuals and institutions with means for assessing program and service effectiveness based on the standards (available as downloadable electronic documents from the online CAS store).
functional area standards are defined as "The set of specific standards and guidelines, with the embedded general standards, that apply to one functional area program or service. Often referred to as the CAS Standards for (insert functional area name)." (CAS, 2023). As of 2023, there are 50 sets of CAS functional area standards.
cross-functional frameworks are defined as "An approach for addressing emerging, evolving, and ongoing issues or topics from a multi- and inter-disciplinary perspective through teams of higher education professionals from different fields or functional areas." (CAS, 2023).
self-assessment guides (SAGs) are defined as "an operational version of the CAS standards and guidelines designed to provide users with an assessment tool that can be used for self-study or self-assessment purposes. A SAG is available for each functional area for which a CAS standard exists" (CAS, 2023)
