Resource Released for HBCU Administrators on Using the CAS Standards

The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is pleased to announce the release of a new resource on using the CAS standards within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This resource was written by Kellie M. Dixon, Ed.D. from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
 
CAS, a consortium composed of over 40 collaborating professional associations representing over 115,000 professionals in higher education, has developed standards for 47 functional areas and 3 cross-functional teams, and rooted them in the scholarship and work conducted within their respective fields. Standards delineate expectations for practitioners and educators in related functional areas, and are published in the 2019 CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education (10th ed), with subsequent updates released online.

In this White Paper on using CAS standards within HBCUs, Dixon highlights the importance of CAS for HBCU administrators: “Exploring the implications of using CAS Standards at HBCUs warrants attention given their historical foundation and their place in today's higher education…  the use of CAS standards at HBCUs provide a framework for telling the story of how student affairs contribute to this special population of students and educators.”

Gavin Henning, former President of CAS, supported the development of this White Paper and commented on the significance of the resource, “HBCUs are critical to equitable educational opportunities and outcomes in higher education. Dixon's paper provides guidance for using CAS Standards to build cultures of assessment so that these institutions can effectively fulfill their mission.”

CAS is pleased to release this resource to assist practitioners in using functional area standards at HBCUs.
