Andrea Reeve, CAS Director, 2013 Walter O. Mason, Jr. Award Winner

Andrea Reeve, Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) Director from the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE), was honored with COE's prestigious Walter O. Mason, Jr. Award earlier this fall. The award, established in 1988 to honor those who exemplify Mason's leadership and ideals, is presented annually to outstanding educational opportunity professionals.

Reeve has long been involved with COE and has served in a variety of leadership roles, including for three years as ASPIRE regional association president. She presently serves as the 2013 ASPIRE Agenda Program Chair. Since 1993, Reeve has served on the CAS Board of Directors representing COE since 1993. In that time, she has served on the committees responsible for the creation and revision of standards for TRIO and Other Educational Opportunity Programs in 1999 and 2008. She was the longtime Director of the Academic Advancement Center, a TRIO Student Support Services program at Colorado State University, and now teaches in the Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) Master's program at Colorado State.

Reeve received her B.A. from the University of California-Berkeley, an M.A. from Western Kentucky University, and has completed coursework toward a doctorate in Adult Learning and Technology from the University of Wyoming.

CAS was established in 1979 to develop standards that promote college student learning and promote self-assessment for institutional effectiveness. Composed of 39 collaborating professional associations representing over 100,000 professionals in higher education, CAS has developed standards and guidelines for 43 diverse areas of the college student experiences.

The eighth edition of the book, CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education, was released in August 2012. The book of standards is the defining source of professional standards for many of the services provided to students in higher education. Along with the book, CAS also released an updated CD of all 43 functional area self-assessment guides (SAGs). The SAGs provide institutions of higher education with strategies for assessing program and service effectiveness based on the evidence a self-study team gathers and evaluates.
