The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education is pleased to announce the release of the revised standards for Collegiate Recreation Programs (CRP). The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education is pleased to announce the release of the revised standards for Collegiate Recreation Programs (CRP). CAS, composed of 42 collaborating professional associations representing over 115,000 professionals in higher education, has developed standards and guidelines for 45 functional areas, and rooted them in the scholarship and work conducted within their respective fields. The new standards delineate expectations for educators in the related functional areas and complement the ninth edition of the CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education.
The committee for the revised standards was chaired by Dr. Jan Hillman, a member of the CAS Board of Directors and representative from the Association for the Study of Transfer Students. Hillman explained that the standards “were revised to reflect current standards of practice and recreation professional competencies.” The revised standards also emphasized sustainability, due to the involvement of facilities and equipment. According to Hillman, “interdisciplinary program development was expanded to encourage collaboration between and among other program/service areas around campus.” The revised standards for Collegiate Recreation Programs highlight the importance of the functional area in the field. “Recreation has been proven to improve recruitment and retention at higher education institutions. Students learn skills and improve abilities--both physical and mental-- by participation in Recreation Programs and through employment in Recreation,” said Hillman. CAS is proud to introduce revised standards that encompass these elements of Collegiate Recreation Programs. The revised Collegiate Recreation Programs standards and Self-Assessment Guide are now available at https://store.cas.edu.
