Representatives from CAS will be presenting various sessions at the ACPA Annual Convention at the end of March.
CAS will present the following sessions at ACPA's Annual Convention March 26 - 29, 2023 in New Orleans, Louisiana:
  • Preconvention Workshop: Conducting Program Review Using the CAS Standards (3/25/2023, 1:00-5:00 pm)
Presented by Ray Plaza, Ph.D. (CAS Member-at-Large - Standards, ACPA CAS Representative, and Senior Director, Office for Diversity and Inclusion, Santa Clara University) and Martha Glass, Ph.D., (ACPA CAS Representative and Assistant Vice President for Administration, Virginia Tech, and ACPA)

In this interactive Pre Convention session, participants will learn and practice detailed steps to implementing CAS standards for program review. Through the use of case studies, individual and small group activities, individual advisement, and discussion, participants will learn how to prepare a unit or division for the program review process intended to foster substantive program improvement. Participants will leave with concrete action steps and tools for implementing a CAS program review on their own campus.

NOTE: Preconvention workshop is $40 and you must add to your convention registration by February 10, 2023. To learn more: https://neworleans2023.myacpa.org/curriculum/pre-cons/

  • CAS 101: An introduction to CAS and its many uses (3/28/2023, 10:30-11:30 am | Galerie 5 Marriott New Orleans)
    Presented by Jen Wells, Ph.D.
(Former CAS Editor, and Associate Professor, Kennesaw State University), Ray Plaza, Ph.D. (CAS Member-at-Large - Standards, ACPA CAS Representative, and Senior Director, Office for Diversity and Inclusion, Santa Clara University) and Martha Glass, Ph.D., (ACPA CAS Representative and Assistant Vice President for Administration, Virginia Tech)

Come learn about CAS 101 and its many uses. CAS is not just a tool for graduate students or senior level professionals. The Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in Higher Education is a consortium of over 40 member organizations that was founded in 1979. CAS operates on a consensus-orientated, collaborative approach and at its core is the focus on student learning. It is well-known for the development of its General Standards with now 50 functional area stand-alone standards.

  • Using CAS for Evaluating Program Effectiveness and Student Learning (3/28/2023, 12:30-1:30 pm | Galerie 5 Marriott New Orleans)
    Presented by Ray Plaza, Ph.D.
(CAS Member-at-Large- Standards, ACPA CAS Representative and Senior Director, Office for Diversity and Inclusion, Santa Clara University), Martha Glass, Ph.D., (ACPA CAS Representative and Assistant Vice President for Administration, Virginia Tech), and Léna Crain, PhD. (CAS Editor and Associate Dean of Students, Bucknell University)

As student affairs professionals we strive to meet the needs of our students. This commitment, coupled with calls of accountability urge us to evaluate those programs and services to demonstrate their impact on student learning. The standards developed by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) are valuable tools for these forms of assessment. In this session participants will learn how to use the standards for program review and evaluation of student learning.
