The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education is pleased to announce the release of a new set of standards for Case Management Services. CAS, composed of 41 collaborating professional associations representing over 115,000 professionals in higher education, has developed standards and guidelines for 46 functional areas, and rooted them in the scholarship and work conducted within their respective fields. The new standards delineate expectations for educators in the related functional areas and complement the forthcoming 10th edition of CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education. Katherine Snyder, Senior Assistant Dean of Students and Behavioral Intervention Team Case Manager in the Office of the Dean of Students at the University of Illinois, wrote the proposal and served as a functional expert for the new Case Management Services standards. Snyder explains the significance of the new standards in the current context of higher education: “As a field, higher education case management has experienced significant evolution, development, growth, and formalization over the past decade. Given the depth and breadth of case management services available in post-secondary environments, it was critical that the standards reflect the needs of all types of institutions at their varying resource levels. As such, these standards incorporate the role and influence of institutional culture on case management services.”
Snyder currently serves on the CAS Council of Representatives representing the Higher Education Case Managers Association (HECMA). Experts from HECMA were instrumental to the development of the new standards, representing a diverse range of institutional types, regions, and Case Management structures. On the value of the standards, Snyder believes “these standards will help provide a common language for case management professionals, promote the goal of continuous improvement through self-assessment, and through that improvement, enhance student learning and development.” CAS is proud to release this new standards for an important and evolving functional area in higher education. The new standards for Case Management Services and all other CAS products are now available at https://www.cas.edu/store_product.asp?prodid=158 - a companion Self-Assessment Guide (SAG) will be be available in May 2019. The Case Management Services standards will also be included in the forthcoming 10th Edition of CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education, which includes standards for 46 functional areas. Please contact CAS Interim Executive Director, Dr. Deborah Garrett with any questions about the new standards ([email protected]).
